Principal directions of research include:
- synthesizing the transformation experience of the economies in transition;
- research of the impact exerted by the market transition process on the international economic relations system;
- peculiarities and tendencies of globalisation process and its influence on Russia's economy.

Post-graduate courses are provided for 17 post-graduate students including 12, studying on the full-time basis. Post-graduates of the department regularly attend the RF State Duma parliamentary hearings, held under the direction of State Commitee for Economic Policy and Enterpreneurship.
The cycle of lectures, read for research students of the SUM covers primarily international economic issues, world economic relations and peculiarities of transitional economies' integration into world economic system.
Once a month, Oleg T. Bogomolov holds a consultating seminar for all the departmental staff and research students on topical problems of world economy.
